McCain shows new dose of resistance against President Donald Trump. Now it springs from President’s ban to transgender military servants. “When less than one percent of Americans are volunteering to join the military, we should welcome all those who are willing and able to serve our country.”
McCain said in a statement, adding: “Any member of the military who meets the medical and readiness standards should be allowed to serve — including those who are transgender”.
The bill is an attempt to establish protections for transgender troops in law, cutting off President Donald Trump’s efforts to kick service members out based on their gender identity.
Back in July, President Trump announced via his Twitter account that he planned to ban all transgender military service, and shortly after in August he followed that intention by signing a presidential memo.
The memo prohibits the military from enlisting transgender people and from using funds to pay for gender transition-related surgery, and it gives Mister Secretary Mattis six months to determine what to do with currently serving transgender troops.
Mattis began assembling a panel of experts to help craft the policy, which he said would promote military readiness, integration and unit cohesion. Transgender people would be allowed to remain in uniform until Mattis completed the work.
On the other hand, Trump’s order to revoke transgender people from the Military triggered a series of federal lawsuits in D.C., Maryland, California, and Washington state against Trump and Mattis because of the policy. Nine transgender plaintiffs in the Washington lawsuit filed a motion for an injunction, asking the federal district court to block Mattis from implementing any ban while the case is being heard. Plaintiffs who sued in D.C. have also asked for an injunction.
