The city of Baltimore, Maryland has some of the strictest gun laws in all of the U.S. However, these laws have done nothing to stop the crime rate from soaring there.
CBS Local reported that Baltimore is currently in one of it’s deadliest times ever, hitting over 300 homicides for the third year in a row. Now that they see that gun control laws are not the answer to stopping this violence, the people of Baltimore have turned on the city’s liberal Mayor Catherine Pugh and accused her of not actually taking the violence seriously.
“Anyone who thinks that I don’t take this seriously or it’s not something alarming to me, this is the most important thing we can do in this city and that’s to reduce the violence,” Pugh said on Wednesday. “I am deeply disturbed about the violence and this is the number one priority of the City.”
Many in Baltimore are calling for a more obvious presence of police in their communities.
“Unless you have more actively involved law enforcement, then I don’t know how this is going to end,” Baltimore resident Steve Bono. “We just can’t keep finger pointing, everyone has to take some responsibility.”
“This is worse than Detroit in one way and even worse than Chicago,” a South Baltimore resident said. “I know a lot of people that are scared to even come out the building. I would hate to see this city go down.”
Though Pugh admitted that Baltimore is battling a shortage of officers, but that close to 200 individuals have already made it through the hiring process.
“When I first started, I said to the police department, fill every single vacancy that you have. We won’t really feel the impact of that until next year,” she said.
This comes hours after a Baltimore police detective died after being shot in the head by an unknown assailant. ABC News reported that Homicide detective Sean Suiter, an 18-year veteran with the Baltimore Police, was conducting a follow-up to a homicide investigation around 5pm on Wednesday when he came upon a man engaging in suspicious activity. He was shot in the head soon after he approached the man.
Suiter was hospitalized and fought valiantly for his life, but he ended up dying of his injuries. A massive manhunt has been underway since his death to find his killer.
“The individual responsible for this heinous crime will be found, charged, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan wrote on Twitter. “The Baltimore Police Department has our full support as they track down this violent criminal and bring him to justice.”
“May God bless the brave men and women of the Baltimore Police and all law enforcement who serve and protect us every single day,” he added.
This all serves as a sad example of the fact that stricter gun control laws are NOT the answer to lowering crime rates, despite what liberals tell you. No matter what the laws are, “bad guys” will ALWAYS find a way to get their hands on guns!
