Robert Mueller Now Investigating Top Democratic Lobbyist

The controversial Podesta Group and its founder Tony Podesta, the brother of John Podesta — the former campaign manager for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign last year — have been included into Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s broader investigation into Russia’s election meddling.

The special counsel is allegedly looking into the group to find whether it broke the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) during its cooperation with the European Center for a Modern Ukraine (ECMU). ECMU, a non-profit organization, participated in a public relations campaign led by Paul Manafort, President Trump’s former campaign manager during last year’s election, to enhance the reputation of Ukraine.

As a recent statement said, The Podesta Group “is cooperating fully with the Special Counsel’s office and has taken every possible step to provide documentation that confirms timely compliance. In all of our client engagements, the Podesta Group conducts due diligence and consults with appropriate legal experts to ensure compliance with disclosure regulations at all times — and we did so in this case.”

The Special Counsel allegedly submitted grand jury subpoenas in August for the companies that were engaged in Manafort’s public image campaign.

The Podesta Group issued its registration for FARA as part of its work on the Ukraine campaign after news broke of the issue.

John Podesta, Toni Podesta’s brother, is a longtime associate in the Clinton administration and Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign chairman for the presidential race. The two brothers launched Podesta Group in 1988.

Leading Republicans — including President Donald Trump — have maintained that the foreign work Tony Podesta conducted should be further looked into.

“Was the brother of John Podesta paid big money to get the sanctions on Russia lifted? Did Hillary know?” the President asked in a tweet.

A spokesperson for the Podesta Group said in a statement that the group “is cooperating fully with the Special Counsel’s office and has taken every possible step to provide documentation that confirms timely compliance. In all of our client engagements, the Podesta Group conducts due diligence and consults with appropriate legal experts to ensure compliance with disclosure regulations at all times — and we did so in this case,” according to NBC News.
